Haley Supports More Fiscal Responsibility; Creation of Main Street Stimulus Team
NEWS FROM HALEY FOR SUPERVISOR
News Release
July 27 2009
Brookhaven, NY: Calling it a financial “wake up call,” Republican Supervisor Candidate Martin W. Haley pledged to “reclaim and overhaul” the way Brookhaven Government does business.
“Not a day goes by that I don't count our blessings that the Republicans are in control of the Town Board,” said Haley, “they have done a great job of reigning in unnecessary spending and watching where our tax dollars go. It’s time to take it to the next level!”
Haley calls for the formation of the Brookhaven Economic Stimulus Team aka B.E.S.T. “This team of professionals or ombudsmen assembled from current employees will serve several purposes,” said Haley, “They will immediately accelerate, without strings attached, all town processes that impact the retention or creation of jobs, coordinate as necessary to make sure concurrent applications to other jurisdictions are not delayed, and get permits issued to meet the needs of our local job creators, small business” “We have a profound responsibility concerning the economic survival of our region. The impact of this stimulus action will churn the economic engine creating jobs and stabilizing our tax base thereby improving the quality of life for our residents.”
Haley also wants all bills and proposals made by the Town Board to be accompanied by an economic impact statement. “People need to know exactly what were doing to make our Town and our lives better,” said Haley, “And we need to up front about how we plan to impact their future.”
“This is not going to be easy,” said Haley, “We hear each and everyday about how our Federal and State Governments are going to lean on us to get us out of this economic funk,” said Haley, “Tell you what, it’s time for us to start leaning back! With experience in Community, Government, Banking and Business, I’m leaving no stone unturned. We’re going to be aggressive and steadfast and find creative ways to stimulate our economy!”
Brookhaven Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia called Lesko’s financial approaches “lacking” and his methods of economic leadership ”flawed”. Garcia pointed to the MTA tax as the best example.
“I want to know how Supervisor Lesko can look a Brookhaven taxpayer in the eye and justify taking another $200,000 dollars of our money for a bailout of New York City residents?” said Garcia,” With that kind of careless fiscal management one must wonder who’s going to bail us out when our finances are sinking?”
Haley is also calling for immediate support for a “Cap on Spending” proposal placing a referendum on the November ballot. In addition, Haley believes we should require more than a simple majority vote to raise taxes at all.
