VOLUNTEERS STRENGTHEN LOCAL COMMUNITIES
News from The Office of Senator Kenneth P. LaValle
1/21/09
Volunteerism is the giving of oneself for the good of others. It is an act that requires commitment and devotion. It builds character, instills self esteem, and the returns on investments are far greater than any measure of wealth.
Throughout my life, I have been inspired by those who unselfishly volunteer their time and talents to help a neighbor in need or better their
community. On Long Island, volunteers play critical roles in our everyday lives. They staff our fire departments, they provide emergency medical services, they extend themselves to their schools and religious organizations, they work to protect our environment, and contribute their time and talents to one or more of the many charitable organizations that serve their communities and beyond. And, whether giving their time at local hospitals, racing off in the middle of the night to fight a fire, orhelping at a charity of their choice, they continually demonstrate a strong commitment and genuine concern for their fellowman.
I am a longtime advocate of community service in our schools and was pleased to hear the First Lady encourage young children to get involved in volunteerism, as they will be the future leaders of this great nation. I have continually supported linking post secondary education and community service as an opportunity to increase the state’s volunteer base. College students across New York State volunteer thousands of hours each year in clubs and activities that support their campus, local community, the state, nation, and even the world.
As a member of the New York State Commission on National and Community Service, I applaud the efforts of the Commission to promote volunteerism and identify volunteer opportunities, including on the campuses of our higher education institutions. There is a need for additional service in communities across New York State, and everyone stands to benefit from engaging our college students in volunteerism.
America's volunteers are truly one of its most valuable assets. With a national focus on volunteerism, it is my hope that we can raise the sense of community and inspire people to consider sharing their time and talents as an essential part of their lives.
