SENATOR LAVALLE HONORS LOCAL HERO

News from The Office of Senator Kenneth P. LaValle
1/20/09

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today honored good Samaritan Joseph Sarno of East Moriches with the New York State Senate Liberty Award. The award was created in 2000 and is bestowed upon individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts or achievements on behalf of others. Mr. Sarno received the award for the instrumental role he played in saving the life of a man found buried up to his chest in a muddy marsh.

Joseph Sarno is a member of the Suffolk County Police Department assigned to the 7th Precinct, where he has served for 5 1/2 years. On
December 20, 2008, off-duty Officer Sarno was duck hunting with his dog when he came upon an 80-year-old man trapped in the marshland off Barnes Road in Moriches. Fred Hall of Mastic was up to his chest in mud, freezing and unresponsive. Officer Sarno dragged Mr. Hall from the muddy marsh and across 200 feet of heavy snow. He covered him with his own jacket, and began administering emergency treatment for hypothermia. His quick actions kept Mr. Hall alive until ambulance workers arrived and transported Mr. Hall to the hospital.

“From time to time, we hear stories of courageous and selfless deeds that are truly deserving of commendation. The actions of Officer Joseph
Sarno provide evidence that humanitarians truly do live among us in our local communities," said Senator LaValle. "Officer Sarno responded quickly and expertly in the face of a life-threatening situation. His reaction to this emergency saved a life and is indeed worthy of special recognition.

“The willingness to help a fellow human being and the genuine concern demonstrated by Officer Joseph Sarno on December 20, 2008 exemplify the human spirit at its finest," continued Senator LaValle. "It is my privilege to bestow upon Officer Sarno the New York State Senate Liberty Award in the presence of family, friends, peers, and the local community in recognition of his lifesaving actions.”
