MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN JESSE GARCIA

Defending Our Party's Ideals & Principles

As committee people, I know how hard you work to elect Republicans to office in Brookhaven Town and at the County level. In fact, just last week, I commended, congratulated and thanked you – the members of the Brookhaven Town Republican Committee – for completing one of the most successful nominating petition drives in recent years.

Because of your hard work going door to door, this year the Brookhaven Town Republican Committee – on its own without the assistance of any other town committee - successfully qualified our 2008 Congressional, State, County and Town slate

At this moment in time, we have the deck stacked against us – Newsday’s biased coverage, a Democratic Governor, a Democratic County Executive and a Democratic Legislature. Now – more than ever – we need to unite behind and support our Republican party, elected officials, and candidates. We need to count on each and every one of those in our party for support and loyalty.

We need to look each other in the eye with confidence, and trust that at the end of the day, no matter our differences, we are Republicans.

Regrettably, some within our own party, like Fred Theile has repeatedly chosen a path that is critical of our elected Republican/Conservative Majority on the Brookhaven Town Board and candidates. He has given comfort and aid to our political enemies at our expense.

It must stop. We cannot allow our hard working committee people, candidates and elected officials to be assaulted from within our own party.

I am proud of our committee people. I am proud of our officials; and I am proud of our Party.

When members of our Party are attacked, I will take a stand to defend and protect each and every one of you.

That is why I responded to Newsday’s short-sided editorial and withheld designating petitions for an official who attacked our Party and our Town Board Majority.

I have taken the liberty of sharing with you the full letter I submitted to Newsday regarding their recent editorial.

Our recent success at the ballot box is directly related to the fact that we are united, energized and have stayed true to our core Republican ideals, beliefs and views.

Chairman Jesse Garcia’s Letter to Newsday In Response to its June 19th Editorial

To the Editor:

Once again, Newsday's editorial board has displayed their left-leaning bias, editorializing that of all things, a political party should somehow sacrifice their ideals and beliefs because it conflicts with the opposing party [Brookhaven battiness, June 19, 2008].

Our core beliefs of smaller government, less taxes and greater self-responsibility are dear to every Republican, and we campaign and are elected to advance these ideals. We stand firm in our beliefs and are not elected to compromise just for the sake of compromise. Government, and ultimately the people, will be better served if they have elected officials who are solid in what they believe and are committed to their ideals.

Yet time and again, Newsday's editorial page has demanded that Long Island Republicans abandon their beliefs to advance an agenda that they do not believe in.

Newsday’s slanted fantasy definition of "bi-partisan" means Republicans compromising their ideals, and simply giving way to the Democrats. In the past decade, it has been rare - if ever - that these editorial pages have demanded that the Democratic majorities in Babylon, Huntington, Suffolk County Legislature or the short-lived Democratic majority in Brookhaven, vote in favor of the common sense legislative approach put forth by the Republican caucus.

Not once have the Democratic machines in Suffolk County been criticized for voting lock-step along party lines, or hiring their party cronies to replace highly qualified people who just happen to be registered Republicans.

This hypocrisy has to end.

Republican elected officials who work together with lawmakers of other parties for the good of our residents are encouraged to do so and are commended.

However, an elected official who repeatedly bashes their own political party in public without first getting the facts on issues, or who simply echoes our opponents’ ‘talking points’, cannot continue to enjoy the toil and sweat of our party’s volunteers. The elected official cannot expect dedicated volunteers walking door-to-door in 90+ degree heat without reciprocal loyalty to the party’s ideals and core principles.

Jesse Garcia, Chairman
